Medal of Honor Recipient: Private Joseph Hanks

Rank and organization: Private, Company E, 37th Ohio Infantry. Place and date: At Vicksburg Miss., 22 May 1863. Entered service at: Chillicothe, Ohio. Birth: Chillicothe, Ohio. Date of issue: 19 November 1897.

Citation: Voluntarily and under fire went to the rescue of a wounded comrade Iying between the lines, gave him water, and brought him off the field.
